Cassaton House Rejuvenated
Acting as Principal Contractor, St Astier undertook a programme of repairs to Cassaton House, in Sunderland. The ground floor of the building is occupied by Sunderland City Council, Northern Rock, Manpower Recruitment, Post Office and Shelter. Floors 1 to 3 are occupied by Sunderland City Council Children Services Department who utilise the space for offices and meeting rooms. To minimise the disruption to what is a very busy city centre location, the majority of works were carried out via a cradle access system.
The works consisted of concrete repairs to 3 elevations where defective areas were evident using Sika concrete repair materials. Protective coating systems were applied to the same locations to address potential latent defects and to enhance the appearance. These included a Migratory Corrosion Inhibitor (MCI), Surface levelling Coat and Elastomeric Paint System. Windows and expansion joints between the concrete panels were re-sealed using Sika Polyurethane mastic and a waterproofing system was applied to the front canopy using the TOR Balcony System.
The project was completed 3 weeks ahead of the initial program and therefore winter working conditions were avoided.
